There’s so much to learn from raising trout

FLX Trout in the Classroom

From October through May, students throughout our region raise trout, right in their classrooms.  Every spring, over 1300 students take field trips to local streams to release their trout fingerlings.  DCL staff are there to guide students and teachers through every step of the process!

The impact of the Finger Lakes Trout in the Classroom program is far-reaching.  The responsibility of caring for living creatures in a classroom setting, is a powerful experience that opens the door to engaged learning – from science and math to writing and cultural studies.

Our goal is to support life-changing classroom opportunities and engender the next generation of stewards for our planet.  Just as they have learned to care for their trout in the classroom aquarium, we see students transfer that care to their newly adopted trout streams each spring.

Dear DCL, Thank you for letting our class be part of the Trout Program.  I learned how to test the tank daily and enjoyed watching the brook trout grow and feeding daphnia to them.  I appreciate all that you did to teach us about trout and other stuff!
